A fire at the Arpit Palace Hotel, Karol Bagh area, New Delhi, India (see hotel on TripAdvisor) killed 17 hotel guests. The fire is thought to have started with a short-circuit in an air conditioner of a room in the hotel and been exacerbated by wooden panelling in corridors. The owner and managers of the hotel have been arrested with media reports stating that the air conditioner may not have been serviced, that the hotel was lacking alarms and fire extinguishers, an emergency exit was locked and that the hotel’s fire safety certificate had been delivered through a breach of procedure by an official from a different zone. Fire safety certificates of 15 other hotels and restaurants in the area have now been suspended.
