The use of FR plastics in E&E

Non-halogenated flame retardants have been commonly used in electric and electronic equipment for many years

The chart (see link below) shows the total amount of plastics used in electric and electronic equipment (ca. 1.5 million metric tons) and the fraction of it which is flame retarded due to fire safety requirements on certain parts and components (ca. 450 000 metric tons). About 59% of the flame retarded fraction contained non-halogenated flame retardants – the vast majority. The statistics date back to the year 2000. In the meantime, the total consumption has certainly increased, the ratio of flame retarded plastics probably has remained stable, whereas the non-halogenated fraction of it will have increased as well.
