C&EN article explains why FRs are today essential if you don’t want to “go back to the days of metal, brick and wood”. Citing research experts in the USA and in Europe, the 8-page article discusses the challenges of developing FRs which are effective, durable and safe for health and the environment. PIN FRs, polymeric and reactive FRs and intumescent coatings are cited as routes forward. Aluminium diethylphosphinate, metal hydroxides, ammonium polyphosphate and bio-based PIN FRs are cited as FR solutions recognised as effective and safe.
