PIN flame retardants can reduce the fire risks of furniture using chemicals which are recognised as safe for health and the environment (5).

Upholstered furniture is a fire danger, as most textiles are flammable and/or melt, leading to ignition of the highly flammable cushion foams. An average three-piece suite has the combustible potential of 10 litres of petrol (2) and can cause flashover (unsurvivable temperatures over 1000°C in the whole room) in minutes (3). Furniture and mattresses cause over a third of fire deaths (3)

Most countries have fire safety regulations for furniture in public places. The UK has the world’s most rigorous fire safety requirements for home furniture and firefighters (4) and the UK Government (6) say that these regulations save lives. The EU FireStat study estimated that furniture fire safety regulation offers positive net cost-benefit (1)
