Activities
Commitment to sustainable flame retardants
pinfa members work together to take forward joint projects and action for safe and sustainable flame retardants and fire safety.
Experts from pinfa member companies cooperate with PIN flame retardant users in different industry sectors, environmental NGOs, scientists and other interested stakeholders.

Engagement
Stakeholder engagement is crucial to develop flame retardants that are both effective and sustainable, ensuring fire safety for everyone.
Stakeholder outreach
pinfa co-operates with policymakers, national & supranational organisations (EU, OECD, United Nations) & other industry associations, consumer organisations & non-governmental organisations by providing expertise to ensure the development of scientific knowledge related to the whole life cycle of PIN FRs.
Sister organisations
pinfa works in close cooperation with its sister association pinfa North America, the North American Phosphorus, Inorganic and Nitrogen Flame Retardants Association.
Partnerships
pinfa has established strong collaborations with various organisations to advance fire safety awareness, research, and policy development, including Particles Platform, EAPFP, EuroFSA, GTFI, INEMI, and Fraunhofer.
Advisory Board
pinfa engages with a multitude of stakeholders through its Advisory Board which consists of representatives from the flame retardant industry, downstream user industries, testing and research institutes, academic circles, environmental experts and firefighting departments.
Events
pinfa sponsors, presents at and participates in events every year such as European Fire Safety Week, AMI events (Fire Resistance in Plastics, Plastics Recycling Technology), Nordic Fire Safety Days, FRPM (Fire Retardant Polymeric Materials). pinfa also organises workshops and webinars on key topics such as recycling to exchange views between different stakeholders
Working groups and task forces
pinfa has several working groups and taskforces dedicated to ensuring fire safety and sustainability such as
- Fire Safety
- Recycling
- CSS (Chemicals Strategy for Safety and Sustainability)
- Melamine Compounds and Melamine
- Phosphorus
- Smoke
- Inorganics-Minerals
- Transport
- Batteries
- Environment & Ecolabels
- Communications and Outreach
Partnership activities
Through key partnerships, pinfa aims to promote a constructive dialogue between stakeholders on a series of issues ranging from fire safety, to the health and environmental footprint of flame retardants and flame retardant containing products.
European Fire Safety Alliance (EuroFSA) is an independent alliance of fire professionals whose mission is to reduce the risks from fire, especially in domestic area. EuroFSA is based on the European Fire Safety Action Plan developed in cooperation with many European experts – the first evidence and knowledge based fire safety agenda for Europe. One of the events of EuroFSA is European Fire Safety Week in which pinfa takes part.
Alongside 17 organisations, pinfa calls for a comprehensive EU fire safety strategy from the next Parliament and Commission. The 6-page Manifesto aims to ensure fire safety for EU citizens in all types of building across Europe through 10 strategic objectives. Challenges include outdated electrical systems and inadequate building safety measures, flammability of household equipment and consumer good and new risks from electrification and sustainable buildings (PV, heat pumps, EV charging …).
- Fire Information and Exchange Platform (FIEP)
The European Commission Fire Exchange Platform (FIEP)’s objectives are to stimulate the cooperation among the Member States as well as to allow the exchange of best practices and lessons learned between the Member States and relevant stakeholders in the field of fire safety.
Research & Information
pinfa itself commissions technical studies, supports joint studies engaged by pinfa members, or can participate in third-party studies, including by providing PIN flame retardant samples for testing and or data needed for research.
Recent studies for pinfa have covered recycling of plastics containing PIN flame retardants, smoke toxicity, chemical grouping of phosphorus flame retardants, release of flame retardants from materials.
pinfa disseminates information on flame retardants and fire safety through our Newsletter and website, and provides technical information to flame retardant users, regulators and stakeholders via the pinfa Product Selector and information about PIN flame retardant applications.
