US NFPA study: home electric fires
Over 45 000 fires/year with fire service callout in the USA start in electrical equipment, resulting in over 500 civilian deaths, 1 500 injuries and nearly 2.5 billion US$/year direct property damage. The study by the US National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) covers 2020-2024. Most of these fires started in kitchen, bedroom or attic/ceiling. Misfunction of electrical equipment or installations, in particular electrical distribution, especially by arcing (short circuits) were much the highest identified fire cause. Although only around one fifth of electrical fires occurred at night, these were responsible for over half of the fire deaths.
