Fire safe textile from recycled plastics

UK-based Camira launches non-halogenated fire protected transport interior textile recycled from marine plastic waste. The yarn, created using recovered waste plastic waste, is provided by Seaqual Initiative, a global organisation which pays fairly local collectors to retrieve plastic wastes, in this case deposited by the sea in Tunisia’s Kerkennah Islands and by the Nile River in Egypt. Camira’s Quest and Oceanic polyester fabrics, recycled from these plastic wastes, are used in automotive, office and bus and coach interiors and are presented as “bringing the ocean’s beauty to fabric”. They are nearly 50% lighter than standard wool-based fabrics with comparable abrasion resistance (over 100 000 Martindale cycles). Both fabrics use Camira’s patented lightweight non-halogenated flame retardant backing to ensure fire safety.
