Low electro-corrosion FR compound
Automotive supplier Kostal Kontakt Systems adopts BASF’s PPA with non-halogenated FR for high current connectors. The new PPA (polyphthalamide) compound is a polyamide 9T with a non-halogenated flame retardant system to achieve UL 94 V-0 down to 0.25 mm, enabling miniaturisation. It is halide free according to EN 50642 with low moisture uptake, so reducing high-current electric contact corrosion and risk of electrical system failures. It also offers high electrical insulation, especially at high temperatures, good elongation at break (reducing stress whitening in compound mounting), dimensional stability up to 265°C and high colour stability and heat aging resistance. The FR PA9T compound is adopted by Kostal for several high-voltage components in its KS22 Class 4 connector which is the smallest in its class.
