Opposition to Swedish electronics ecotax

Several industry federations have again criticised Sweden's ecotax on electronic goods saying it is ineffective and uneconomic. The tax’s stated intention is to reduce use of toxic chemicals, but in fact all electronics goods are taxed according to weight, including second-hand. The industry groups say that the tax represents a significant price increase for electronics goods purchased in Sweden (c. 60€ on a cheap TV) and is resulting in 1/8th of such purchases in Sweden now being made abroad, including via foreign online platforms, so probably increasing the flow of toxic chemicals into Sweden. They estimate that the tax earned the Government around 220 million € revenue in 2024. The industry groups suggest that negative impacts outweigh this, including loss of tax on imports, lost jobs in commerce in Sweden and damage to the Swedish electronics industry.
