Scooter battery fire kills four

Fatal fire in 4th floor flat in Reims, France, 6th June, started with a scooter battery fire, next to a freezer and a washing machine. The fire killed four people, including two children, and 28 others were injured, including two seriously on the 8th floor. Most of the injuries were due to smoke. The fire was extinguished over two hours after it started. French media underlined the risks of lithium ion battery fires, which are very difficult to extinguish. Advice to the public includes owning a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket, using only quality chargers and batteries, not charging batteries longer than necessary and charging batteries only under surveillance (the latter advice may be unrealistic: the Reims fire started at 20 minutes past midnight and many people charge batteries overnight).
