Smoke detectors should use FR plastics
Manufacturer Ariza, USA, says that to avoid smoke alarms contributing to fires they should use only UL 94 V-0 materials. In Europe, EN 14604 sets temperature and performance for smoke detector casing materials. UL 94 V-0 is the standard fire performance requirement for E&E (electrical and electronic equipment). This can be completed with structural design which resists melting, deformation and ignition. Ariza underlines that if the smoke detector’s plastics are not fire resistant, this can lead to the alarm failing during the early stages of a fire, compromising the whole fire safety system.
