Towards greener intumescent coatings

UBE’s 76% bio-origin glycerol carbonate can potentially replace pentaerythritol in PIN intumescent fire coatings. Glycerol carbonate offers low toxicity, low volatility and ready biodegradability and can be supplied by UBE certified 76% bio-origin. It can be incorporated into PIN intumescent fire-protection paints either by reaction with the acid source or by integration into the polymeric resin of the paint. Besides, under heat, CO2 is released, ensuring the intumescent function. Glycerol carbonate has other applications including cosmetics, polymer chain extension and cross-linking, and reaction with amines for urethane bonding.
