Towards greener intumescent coatings

UBE’s 76% bio-origin glycerol carbonate can potentially replace pentaerythritol in PIN intumescent fire coatings. Glycerol carbonate offers low toxicity, low volatility and ready biodegradability and can be supplied by UBE certified 76% bio-origin. It can be incorporated into PIN intumescent fire-protection paints either by reaction with the acid source or by integration into the polymeric resin of the paint. Besides, under heat, CO₂ is released, ensuring the intumescent function. Glycerol carbonate has other applications including cosmetics, polymer chain extension and cross-linking, and reaction with amines for urethane bonding.
