UL fire tests for residential storage batteries

UL 9540B defines fire testing of residential batteries installed near other batteries, installations or materials or under roof. It complements UL 9540A which tests individual residential battery systems, requiring both certification of certain components (UL 1741 certified inverter, UL 1973 certified battery packs) and testing of the complete battery system’s behaviour under thermal runaway. UL 9540 targets larger energy storage systems. Other standards include NFPA 855 covering installation of large scale energy storage systems. The new UL 9540B standard responds to regulators’ demands for fire testing of residential battery installations.
